The Division has a longstanding tradition of excellence in patient care, education and research.

The Division's clinical activities are largely focused on delivering excellent primary care and hospital based care and serving as excellent clinical role models for students and housestaff. The Division provides up to date evidence-based care and is extensively involved in continuous quality improvement efforts in its practices. The Division cares for diverse patient populations from Pittsburgh and surrounding communities.

The Division is a leader in educational activities at the student, resident, fellow and faculty levels. It is responsible for student teaching in all four years of medical school. The Division faculty direct the categorical, community categorical, primary care, women's health, medicine-pediatric, preliminary, and transitional training programs and teach extensively in all aspects of the residency program as well as at the Institute for Clinical Research Education.

The Division has research programs in clinical epidemiology, clinical effectiveness, health services, medical informatics, and medical ethics. The research in these areas is carried out through the Centers and Sections, which offer collaborative links and specialized expertise in focused areas of investigation. The Center for Research on Health Care, established in 1995 with Dr. Kapoor as the Director, is a major health services research center at the University and has led to a great deal of collaboration among investigators throughout the University.
